Legacy of Heroes

London sewers

moving through the city the party find themselves in a wide street with a river or a sewer running down the middle. It is the river Fleet and they are on Fleet street. On one side of the street are hovels and on the other side there are 3 storey stone houses that are all painted cream. Leopold leads them to one house and they knock on the door. It is opened by a butler wearing livery. He is under the same enchantment as the party as he doesnt look quite right. They enter and he goes off to get tea. He returns with another person carrying a tray full of cups and a kettle. The butler looks like a kobold called Splatchfoot and the other guy looks like a goblin called Scum. They are the domestic staff at the embassy. He thinks we may have kidnapped his master and asks why they are here. The party assure him we did not kidnap his master and ask him why he thinks that. He replies that his master is not in his room and his room is a mess with a note left behind. The note says we have your master, he will not be harmed unless the secret is revealed. Splatchfoot tells us the most obvious secret is that this is an embassy for creatures that are trying to take over the world. Among other secrets are that he has a steam engine and knows where potatoes come from. Another secret is that the Empress Matilda is working for a red dragon. He is an ancient dragon and been in this world for 2000 years. There is a shrine for him at a place called Stonehenge. Another secret is that there is a large temple under the city. One of his people had been exploring underneath the city and came across it. He thinks the dragon has kidnapped his master as they have some kind of dispute with him. The entrance to the sewer is where the Fleet meets the Thames beneath a round building with a grate set into the wall. If we find the master we should demand a reward first before we save him. His name is Bakhir and he has brown curly hair and wears an eyepatch. He is a priest and worships Malgash. Malgash is the most powerful god in existence and is worshipped by many people. He looks like a lizard. The party thank Splatchfoot for the information and leave for the sewers. They find the round building and the grate which has 4 guards in armour standing watch. They are expecting the group but not expecting a female. Willowbark asks why and one guard replies that women are dainty and weak. She takes offence and shoots him in the leg, he goes down. Another guard yells out to the party please control your woman. Again she takes offence and combat of a sort starts. Glim casts a spell and suffocates one guard into unconsciousness. Kurl attacks another guard and disarms him by breaking his sword. Cathbad blink dogs in front of the guards and turns to defend them by growling at the party, mainly at Willowbark. Tankar grapples the other guard into submission. They are now subdued by one means or another. She walks away 100 yards so she can compose herself while the party asks questions of the guards. They take orders from the Lord Mayor and they know there are things in the sewers that are not dragons. Basalt unlocks the grate and they enter followed by Willowbark a few minutes later. There is another big heavy grate in the floor which Tankar lifts out of the way. There is a ladder leading down about 5 meters. They descend to an ancient brick vault where the floor is covered with scummy water which is more mud than water. There are tunnels in 3 directions. NE leads under the city, NW leads under the city walls and the other tunnel leads towards the Thames. Cathbad smells dung and they follow his nose through the muck. Uther has disappeared. The water is knee deep and the floor is slippery. They approach a pile of big dung. It could be from a dinosaur like thing. Moving through the water they come across a leather curtain that has been painted to look like the wall. Cathbad blinks towards it, Tankar turns invisible and approaches too. There is small person behind it, a hand comes out holding a piece of meat. Cathbad plays along and takes it. A young child comes out, she is approximately 10 years old and appears nervous. She wants payment for passage by all the adults. The monster up ahead killed 7 guardsmen. Willowbark pays her and she puts the money is a heavy purse that is hanging around her neck. They ask who else has been down here and she replies a man in a green cloak gave her this purse and passed by. She tells us to be careful as there are things ahead that eat people. Glim talks her into becoming his page and she accepts. Her name is Perf. They continue on. The water starts to descend downwards down a passage. They follow it and come out into a huge lake like area. There is a voice coming from the right so Tankar and Cathbad swim through the water to approach it. They both go over a waterfall. Tankar manages to grab onto the wall but Cathbad falls into the freezing water beneath. Willowbark and Glim see a bridge and proceed to cross it. Perf tells them it is a bad idea as a troll lives under the bridge and he will want payment for passing over it. They ignore her warning and cross only to find a half eaten corpse that turns out to be the troll. 3 toed creature tracks litter the area. Glim asks Perf who else might be down here. He yells out and gets a response from the distance. Willowbark waves a torch in the darkness to attract the attention of all the other party members. They all eventually join her and Glim. They walk along a small platform ledge next to the lake. They come to a fissure in the wall, it descends and the party can see a large dinosaur half way down. Glim quickly puts fireseeds in place and return to the party. The dinosaur starts to climb towards the party but stops at the fireseeds. It starts to talk. We explain that we come to rescue Bakhir. He is apparently dead but told the dinosaur everything about the Ministry that he knew. The ministry want to rule this world and we do not belong here. He speaks to Willowbark about her actions and tells her she could be great. He speaks to Glim also and warns him about his actions. Uther turns up next to the dinosaur, drunk. He has informed the dinosaur all about the party. The dinosaur is called Great Britain and he informs us that we are destined to deal with the ministry. The ministry is located at a place called Wales in a place called Cardiff. There are 30 of his type of dinosaur in this world. In exchange for more information and help He can regenerate Glims hand but can only do it in pairs. He asks Glim to cut his other hand off so he can heal him. After much deliberating Glim complies with this request and cuts off his other hand. Great Britain regenerates both hands for him. Great Britain wants the ministry dealt with as well. In Cardiff castle there is a deepest dungeon. In that dungeon is a man called Corialanus. He is a spirit of wind. Great Britain wants him released but we must tell him he will die within a week of being released and he must complete a ritual before his death. They ask what sort of ritual and it is and it involves human sacrifice. Blood for the blood. It will bind this world so the ministry cant gain control of it. He points a shortcut out of the sewers for the party.

London bound

The party finds themselves lost in the desert. Cathbad changes into eagle form and espies the layout of the land and which direction we should be headed. He stays in the skies to act as lookout for the party and to make sure they are going in the right direction toward Shadowvale. On the second night in the desert they make camp. Sometime in the middle of the night a sudden rainstorm hits them, it is unlike any sort of rain they have encountered before. The sky goes black and the next thing the party knows is that they can feel grass underneath them and the sun is rising. They get the feeling they are not in the same place and have been teleported again. They are in a field of about 30 to 40 cows. with a man wearing homespun clothing approaching. He demands money for camping in his field. It turns out the closest town is called London. Somehow the party are under an enchantment that makes everyone look humanish. Hacksor pays him off with silverware. They are in a place called Little Skorin which is about 8 miles out of London. The party ask many questions. They are in a country called England and the current king is someone called Richard 1, or so the farmer thinks. Sir Steson is the farmers Lord and he hasnt been seen for several months. He lives in a manor house on the hill which is currently occupied by a steward. The party head off to London. A couple of miles later they come across a party of people of donkeys. Willowbark shoots an arrow at them in warning and tells them to halt. One of them is holding a cross on a stick, another person is shirtless carrying a whip. Another man gets off a donkey and dons a sword and armour and approaches the party. He will defend the others as he thinks we are bandits. Willowbark explains that she thought they were the bandits and were going to attack us. It seems he is heading to the holy land and his party are pilgrims who worship someone called God. He goes back to get his priest to come and talk to the party. Father Sparhawk approaches and after a conversation about his god and our many gods he decides we are heathens and runs back to his party yelling to kill Tankar. Glim shoots magic missile at the priest to protect the party. The priest dies. On seeing this his party of pilgrims scatter and the knight steps up to protect them while they are escaping. Cathbad makes a deal with Glim not to kill anyone else for a day. Tankar approaches the knight and apologises for Glim. Somehow he sees through Tankars enchantment and sees his true form of a dragon and attacks Tankar. He manages to grapple the knight down to the ground. The knight says we have a devil child who can do witchcraft. Mimsy makes things worse by summoning Glod to try and convince him we are not devil demons but magical beings from another world. He doesnt believe us so Tankar puts him into a deep sleep. The party move on to London. Within an hour they see a huge walled city with a river on its left. There is a large castle on the edge of the city with many people walking around the vicinity. They enter a small village on the outskirts with a temple and a few houses. There is a man with a donkey and a dead body of the priest that Glim killed from the pilgrim party talking to a head priest at the temple. He tells the priest we are devil demons. Cathbad manages to persuade the priest that we are not devils and the priest just happened to drop dead. The head priest believes him and they continue on to London. The main gates are wide open with guards on either side. They demand to know what business the party is on and Cathbad says we are there to restock supplies and move on. They say there is a fee for entering and Glim pays it. Inside they enter the first church they find to try and get some information. No one has heard of the Ministry of Winds. The priest here summons a junior priest called Andrew to lead us to a monastery. They stop by a market to gather supplies and move on. Jock spies a pub called The Bull and Bear and they all make a detour for it. Much information gathering. There is no King called Richard but 2 rulers, one called King Stephen who occupies the castle, another ruler called Empress Mathilda who occupies the tower. Tankar heads off to the monastery to see if he can train with the monks and to get some answers. Someone there has heard of the Ministry of winds, a man called Leopald Wisdom was talking about them 4 months ago and was accused of witchcraft and locked up in the tower of London. Tankar rejoins the party and tells what he knows. The party find an Inn called the kitkat club and spends the night resting. Meanwhile, while the party are resting Jock investigates the town and the tower vicinities. There are 2 entrances with guards walking the parapets every 2 to 3 minutes. He scales the walls of the tower, no one notices. He can hear various conversations. He makes a diversion and enters a tower. There is a barracks with a spiral staircase going up to a landing with a heavy oak door. It is occupied. 2 more floors which are unoccupied. He goes back down to the door and throws stones through a grate in the door and wakes the occupant. He has found Leopald. He rejoins the party in the inn. Tankar not knowing this has done his own investigations of the tower, climbs a wall but someone sees him and shoots arrows at him and sets off alarm bells. He turns invisible and knocks out a guard, unlock the door and enters Leopalds cell. He asks questions of Leopald. He knows a bit about the Ministry of winds and it seems someone wanted to hire out his house. He wants a pardon in exchange for showing Tankar where his house is. Tankar breaks out of the tower and returns to the inn to tell the party what he knows. Dawn breaks and the party ask the inn keeper who is a justice of the peace and how to get a pardon for Leopald. The inn keeper just happens to be a jp and informs the party they need to see the Empress queen. They head off to the tower. A guard recognises Jock from the previous night as someone who was climbing the walls of the tower, he persuades the guard that it wasnt him and they are allowed to enter. They are in luck, it is audience day with the queen but unfortunately there is a queue of about 30 people. It will take hours so through any means possible Jock manages to get rid of half the queue and after an hour they get to see the queen. The queens advisor says there is no Leopald Wisdom in the tower, he was executed 3 months ago. The queens summons the executioner to talk to Jock. After talking to him, Jock manages to procure a pardon for Leopald. They release Leopald and he leads them to his home.

killing a Sphinx

The party appear on a stone platform infront of a swirling crystal globe which is 4 feet in diameter. Willowbark steps towards it but Jock steps on her cloak to stop her. Inside the globe is a horrible figure, it looks like Basalt. Mimsy is sure that Basalt is about to step out of the crystal and attack the party. Basalt steps up to it. Glim casts magic missile at the globe and slightly cracks it. Basalt attacks the fake Basalt. Jock trips the real Basalt to the floor and holds him there. The figure now coaleses into a smaller figure. Glim shatters the globe. Inside is a huge tentacle shaped mushroom creature. His name is Kregor and he is a semi demi prince of plane of shadows. He was enclosed by Merath the Sphinx. He informs us she is standing behind us. She actually is standing on a balcony slightly above us and she wants us to kill Kregor. While everyone talks to Merath, Willowbark shoots Kregor, nothing happens. Jock gets off Basalt. Willowbark reaches up to grab Kregor to try to release him but Uther slaps her down to stop her. Jock throws some holy berries that Glim prepared at both Kregor and Merath. Now Kregor has vanished as well as Basalt. Combat starts and Merath focuses all her attention on Jock and swallows him whole. She yells at Cathbad, do one thing for me, destroy the queen, destroy the crown and breathes at him. Kurl takes her out with a few well aimed strikes. Jock manages to find his way out through her throat and mouth. The room has doors on the west wall with runes on which read, behind lies the queens tomb, enter and visit the evil womb. There are doors on the balcony and a secret door at the end of the balcony. One of the doors leads to a room with an altar that the sphinx was using as a bed. Crow opens the secret door which leads to a beautifully carved arched passageway which is smooth and carved out of emerald. The doors ahead have been painted green to match the corridor. The party hear heavy breathing coming from the other side. They open the door. There is a large empty space with 6 circular columns and a stone platform with a large sphinx creature covered in bandages. Glim starts to cast fireball at it. A voice says in his head, You do not want to do that little one. He ignores it and casts fireball but it backfires and blows off his left hand. They talk to the sphinx. She is Ankhoret and she understands that the party are here to talk to her and kill her. She informs them that she used to work for the Ministry of Winds but now she works for fire. A singularity exploded and created many worlds, the ministry of winds is the proto winds. At the edges of the multiverse there are barriers that hold back many things. The ministry was supposed to control and enforce these barriers but it has since been corrupted. If the party are against the ministry it seems the party are destined for great power. The ministry either uses you for a tool or marks you as enemies. Cathbad asks about the carvings on the walls of the party. It seems they are the ones who are prophesised to kill her. She is willing to be killed. Glim takes the crown and casts disintegrate on it. An earthquake begins. A hole appears in the roof, Cathbad transforms into a blink dog and escapes to the surface. The party make a mad dash along the balconies and climb up the sand that Cathbad has pushed down to make an escape route for them. They eventually find themselves standing around a huge crater in the middle of the desert with the original statue of the sphinx that they first saw. there are mountains in the distance.

How to kill a rogue with lava and an Orangutan

Crow has an uncontrollable urge to drink the water but Cathbad stops him. They all go back to the main room. They place 4 keys into centre pyramid. They pop back out and the pyramid starts to descend. Everyone jumps onto the pyramid and they descend many hundreds of feet. Finally it comes to a rest in the sw corner of a room. The room has 2 doors and 2 statue of sphinxes and 2 sphinx sarcophagi. The 2 statues are covered in gems while the sarcophagi have inscriptions on them. Cathbad grabs Uther and points to Willowbark and pushes Uther towards her. It seems he doesnt want her to touch or do anything. Crow examines the murals in the room. The murals depict the fall of an empire and a tomb being built. the second mural depict humanoids examining a tomb and then the same humanoids fighting a queen sphinx. The party seem to think they are depicting them again. Willowbark reads the inscription on the sarcophagi. It says Sometimes a treasure not plundered is the greatest wonder. Place Iti anun in his left and Iti atun in his right. Then bathe Ankhorets head with daylight. 1 × 1 × 1 unseen gain an audience with the queen. Seems key items have to be fit into the statues, none of the previous keys fit. Cathbad opens the north door, it is a corridor with a door at the end, he closes it and opens the other one. It goes further than he can see so he closes it. Cathbad and Uther try to open the sarcophagi but the lids wont budge. Crow meanwhile plucks the gems out of all the statues, breaking one in the process. The party decide to go down the north door corridor, at the end at the next door a voice booms out with another riddle. Something about fire. The door is inscribed with runes that say the right path is safe the other leads to the lake. Glim cast mass fire shield on the party to protect them. They open the door, there is intense heat coming from the room and it is glowing red. The room has several ledges with gargoyle statues on them around the walls. In the middle of the room is a pool of lava with a platform in the middle. On the platform is a staff. There are stepping stones drifting on the lava. Crow volunteers to cross the lava and ties rope around himself and gives the other end to Cathbad so he can be pulled out in an emergency. He decides to take the right path and steps onto the first platform, safe, then he jumps onto the second platform but slips. Cathbad pulls him back but manages to pull him into the lava instead. He takes heavy damage but attempts to try again. He fails again and Cathbad manages to pull him partly into the lava again, but he manages to grab the stepping stone and pulls himself onto it. Deciding that he is close enough, Crow throws a grappling hook towards the centre platform, it takes but he somehow manages to fall into the lava again. Eventually he succeeds after many more failures and grabs hold of the platform. He climbs partway up the trellis that is here and takes the staff. However the lattice changes into a wall of blades, narrowly missing Crow. Uthar steps up to help Cathbad pull Crow back from danger and they just manage to succeed, returning a very burnt and scorched Crow back to the party. Back in the main room they put the staff into the right hand of the statue. They take the other door, another door at the end of this corridor, another voice booms out. Says something about beware the 11 heads but beware most the 12th guardian and that fire is our friend. They enter through the door and enter a maze. Kurl hears something whispering in his ear but ignores it. After many twists and turns Willowbark and Basalt notice a circle on the floor with dust sprinkled over it. Basalt disables it. Many more twists and turns and corridors, they come across a corridor surrounded by fog. It is either acidic or poisonous or both. Glim shoots a fireball down it, nothing happens except there is now a smell coming from it. Cathbad and Crow walk into it, Crow having to retreat as he was not immune to acid. Cathbad continues on and finds another corridor which results in a dead end. He goes back and the acid fog seems to end. He goes back to the party and through interpretive dance manages to convince the party that if they run fast enough they will get through the poison acid without taking too much damage. They go. More corridors that twist and turn, Willowbark notices another circle in the floor which Basalt disables and they continue. They go down one corridor and there is a flash and the party are teleported to another part of the maze. Now they are totally lost as no one can work out which direction they are facing. They decide to keep going left as they have been all along and manage to activate a stone hammer trap. It miraculously misses everyone and they continue. Another flash, they are teleported again. They keep going left, another stone hammer trap, they disable it and continue. Flash, teleported into acid fog and think this is not going to end well. The fog has another stone hammer trap that hits Cathbad, they run through it. Eventually and many more twists and turns they find their way to the centre of the maze. They enter a room with a platform holding a chain which is around a 11 headed creature. There is a metal tube suspended above it. Glim tries to plant holy berries around the hydra. It notices him and demands that they give him the Woman Elf and they can all go free. The party seriously consider its request but in the end they try to bluff it. It works. Glim continues to plant holy berries around it and blows the hydra up. He soon makes short work of it with another spell. Willowbark dances on its ashes while Uther angrily confronts Glim about him offering Willowbark and Uther up to the hydra. Willowbark notices that inside the tube at the top is another staff. They tie a rope around Glim and Cathbad attempts to throw him up inside the tube to get the staff. After many tries he succeeds and grabs the staff, pulling it out. As he pulls it out the inside of the tube turns into spinning swords. They eventually manage to find their way back to the main room and put the other staff into the statues other hand. The party rest up and heal. Crow puts the gems back into the statues after much convincing from the party. One of the 4 keys they found emits a ray of light that strikes the gems which unlocks the sarcophagi. Inside 1 of the sarcophagi it says to defeat your enemy Queen Ankhoret you must first defeat your greatest adversary. Crow climbs into a sarcophagos and the lid closes, it wont open. There is nothing in the other coffin so Cathbad climbs in and the lid closes but the other one opens. It is now empty, Crow nowhere in sight. Glim climbs into it, the lid closes, the other opens, Cathbad is now missing. One by one the party climb into the coffins and disappear. They reappear in a room on a stone platform with a big crystal in the chamber.

through the riddle doors

the party decide to go through the riddle doors one at a time. They choose foundation first. They enter a long corridor with a door at the end. Inside is a chamber with sand on the floor and carved stone lion statues. Jock and Tankar enter and set off a trap which seals the door with them inside. Inside the room it is 40 foot by 40 foot and the walls are slanted. There are 5 large lions with a bigger one standing over them. This one has a jewel in the middle of its chest. Sand starts to pour into the room through a hole in the wall, they both manage to seal it shut. With help from Cathbad and Kurl on the other side of the door all 4 manage to lift open the door. Cathbad determines that if one person stands in the doorway the door will not close so he volunteers. Mimsy identifies the statue as an earth elemental greater earthen leonid and the smaller ones are small earthquake leonids. Mimsy attempts to talk to it. It seems frightened by the company. She asks it if kitty wants some milk as she is not lactating. Willowbark approaches the statue and strokes it. It feels cold to the touch but the jewel feels warm. She takes the jewel out and the statue attacks her. She drops the jewel which Jock picks up and puts back into the chest of the statue. He takes out a herring from his backpack and offers it to the leonid in an attempt to appease the creature. One of the smaller statues now animates and lunges for the herring. The larger one also pounces on the herring. Now it is calm Mimsy talks to it again and apologises for the stupidity of Willowbark. Jock gives it more fish. Mimsy is allowed to examine the jewel so she takes it. It turns out to be a triangular key with the eye of horus on it.Written on it is draconic language. Kurl reads it, it says Kataro and activates it which it turns into a flamings sword. A flaming burst ghost touch plus 2 longsword. Jock takes it, deactivates it for the moment. The party leave the room and enter the main room. They go through the balance door which is a same corridor with another door at the end. Jock and Tankar disable the door. Inside the floor is brown fluid which turns out to be pure acid. In the centre of the room hanging from the ceiling is a glowing sphere. There is a ship in the middle of the room with a plank leading to it. Glim hurls magic missile at the sphere and randomly manages to kill a creature that was hiding inside it. Jock examines the boat and finds a scroll which Glim takes. The ship starts to sink so Jock grabs the scroll and races off the boat to safety. Mimsy examines the acid and it sticks to her, the party manage to get it off her. The ship disappears into the acid. Tankar climbs along the walls to the other end of the room and finds a closed alcove. Jock follows him and they both manage to unlock the alcove door. There is another triangle symbol with a small corked jar containing black liquid. They take the items and climb back to the party. Jock activates the key, it turns into a big round shield. Back in the main chamber the party take the next door knowledge. Another corridor with another door at the end. Inside is a 40 foot square chamber with 50 foot high ceiling. A black obelisk stands in the center with a tan obelisk in an alcove at the other end of the room. Willowbark examines the black obelisk, it feels smooth but has things carved on it. Mimsy ascertains that it is an illusion. Jock takes the 4 keys out of the tan obelisk and it turns into a tree thingie that attacks. after the fight they examine the keys and find they are just gold replicas. Tankar fiddles with the black obelisk and the roof falls in damaging half of the party. He takes the 3 remaining keys and one turns into wings with a backpack on it. Again Jock takes them for safe keeping. They go back to the main room and take the remaining door leadership. Another corridor and door. Inside is a sandy waste of desert and in the distance is an oasis. Cathbad detects magic and it turns out to be an illusion. Willowbark uses one of her jars of true seeing and gives the other one to Jock to use. They see a stone room with a pond and a statue. The statue is a female sphinx overlooking a pool of water. In the pond is shiny object. The statue blinks and looks at Jock and starts speaking to him. They dont understand so Willowbark goes back for Mimsy to see if she understands what it is saying. She doesnt. The rest of the party follow and it seems Orangutan Cathbad can understand it as it is talking in monkey language. It tells him to get the party to drink the water. The water is actually poisoned. Kurl dives into the pond since he is immune to acid and retrieves the triangle key. It is a helm with the eye of horus on it. Again Jock takes it for safe keeping with all the other keys. They turn out to be lesser keys.

Riddle me this.

the group has a scroll message delivered to them. Kurl recognises the seal and says OH CRAP. it seems it was sent by someone called Elminister. It describes the party exactly so there is no mistaking that it gets delivered to anyone else. The gist of the message says that Elminster of Shadowdale understands that we are dealing with the ministry of winds and he can put us into contact with someone who can help us if we visit him. The party decide to rest before heading off. Meanwhile Cathbad teleports himself back to the druids to present the head druid with the hag druids robes and to inform them of what transpired. He also gets some more information about Elminster. He is almost considered a god and is a very very very powerful wizard that we dont want to cross. He also has a close friendship with the god of magic. He teleports back to the group. They mount the pegasi and head off to see Shadowdale and Elminster. It takes 3 days. Shadowdale looks like a nice village. It has a pub, druids grove, 2 temples, a manor house,Mother Tara fest hall and several farms. Also is an underrated tower. Jock enters the Old Skull Inn. It is a 3 story building with a smoky taproom. He orders drinks and asks for information on the town. The 2 temples belong to Lathander and Tyche. After drinks they decide to approach the tower which is about 3 to 4 stories high. Cathbad knocks and a side door opens into a kitchen. Inside is a man taking fresh bread out of the oven. The party enter the kitchen. While they partake of the fresh bread and a meal the man disappears to inform the master that we are here. After half an hour he returns and the party go to meet Elminster and as Kurl is the only one who has heard of him, the party push him ahead to act as spokesman or victim depending on how one looks at the situation. Elminster is wearing red wizard robes and is reclining on a divan. He was sent a description of the party and is acting as an intermediary on behalf of someone else located on the other side of this world. A Sphinx which is a lion with the head of a human. It has sent out a description to many people looking for the party and wishes to see us. He is a great depository of knowledge and therefore has information on the ministry. His name is Khubsheth the prophet and located in a desert with 2 statues of sphinxes. He is located at one of the bases of said statues. As the party do not want to take the pegasi into the desert plus they are only on loan to us and have to return to the druids, the party ask Elminster how long it will take to get there. 5 months walking, or 3 months by horse, or 3 to 4 months by ship but he will teleport us within 4 miles of the sphinx which the party thankfully accept. He takes us to the top of his tower and teleports us to the desert. Heat is very oppressive and they have appeared directly in front of one of the statues at the back of it. It is a very large statue and is a 4 mile walk around to the front. They head off and eventually enter a small valley located between the 2 front paws of the statue. Sleeping at the entrance is a Sphinx, Glim realises it is not snoring but actually casting spells at the party. It grows in size and stands up. It summons a swarm of insects to attack the party which Willowbark casts windwall to push them away. The party attack the Sphinx in defense as it doesnt want to communicate or come to any understanding. Eventually a voice booms out a riddle then the sphinx dies. Behind the sphinx is a cave. The riddle said, poisoned pride once broke our pact, we bound the deafless and buried them deep, to wait for shadows bane, 2 legs walk where 4 legs failed, and Kuthbshet blood will break the shield, the cursed one waits within, the prophets slayers are bound within ,to pass the test complete our test, and break Ankorets crown. They enter the cave through a stone doorway. Inside is a 20 foot wide corridor with dusty stairway. The stairs continue a quarter of a mile into another 20 foot corridor. It is 70 foot room with 20 foot high walls with murals on. There are columns with runes. At the other end of the corridor is a set of double doors with a female sphinx wearing a crown. Willowbark as usual blunders ahead with Basalt following and try the door. It doesnt open but a trap door filled with spikes appears under them, they both manage to swiftly evade the trap. Meanwhile Cathbad and Glim examine the murals. The party is depicted in them. Jock examines the floor looking for any other traps or levers and finds none. Willowbark and Basalt rejoin the party. She spots writing on the floor which strangely she can understand. It says When the sphinx queen faces west the time to enter the tomb is best. The murals also depict the history of an empire working with gods and also of a royal family with sphinx on a river. On closer examination of the columns they find that they can be rotated. The party rotate the columns, the pit closes, the door opens. Beyond the door is an impressive hall with another door in the far room and more murals. There are 5 stone pedestals on each wall, each containing a dead sphinx. The murals have the party depicted in them again. Cathbad investigates the dead sphinxes, the eyes appear to move and follow every move he makes. Just as a safety precaution he rotates them so that they are all facing and looking at each other. Jock opens the door. There is a chamber 80 foot square, 40 foot high. The party entered through the west corner but soon loose track of which corner it was. there are 4 doors each with a pedestal , a queen sphinx and a pyramid in the middle of the room. The doors all have riddles on them. The party work out the answers to riddles which are 1st door balance, 2nd door knowledge, 3rd door leadership and the 4th door foundation.

After the fight Willowbark and Ortillo notice that the entrance to this chamber has closed shut. They wonder if every chamber has been sealed behind them as well. Tankar searches the plinth. It seems to have a gutter that runs around the top of it. Crow pours water into it and the water starts to boil. Cathbad touches the plinth and gets a prickly feeling emanating from it. It turns out to be magical as does the whole room. The stone plinth starts to sink into the floor. As it sinks below the floor liquid starts to seep in and around the sides of the hole. It is acid. Glod tries to punch a hole out of here, it does not work. The acid starts to trickle up out of the hole and starts covering the chamber floor. Willowbark jumps onto one of the only rocks in the chamber to escape the acid, everyone else climbs onto Glod who is immune to acid. Kurl notices a sphincter is opening in the wall and the whole room explodes in acid doing massive damage to the party. The sphincter opens up into a 6 foot hole and the chamber starts shrinking. The party is surrounded by a mysterious force shield wall bubble which is protecting the party. They are suddenly expelled from the room at an alarming rate. The bubble rolls the party through the tunnels passing many vistas, organs and vines in the walls. They pass many small passages and chambers. They see many giant purple worms blur by. They finally come to a stop mid air in a round 30 foot chamber made of glistening walls. The bubble bursts and the party fall toward the ground but something is slowing their fall. Many shadows and faces start appearing and arguing between themselves. Mimsy is sure they are now inside the mind of a demon and are listening to its thoughts. A large 3 sided dice is rolled in the air. 2 thirds of the voices fall silent. 1 group is still talking. It says Welcome, you have survived. This impresses us. We can use you as an ally. Another set of voices says Kill Them All. Another set of voices say No we want you to be our allies. They all start talking at once but one stands out among the rest. It says We want you to help us destroy Lazbrathull and you can leave this place. It seems there are 3 parties, one the vengeance seekers who want to destroy Lazbrathull, 2nd is the Destoyers who wants to destroy the party, the 3rd are the Conquerors who are interested in the party but wont reveal any terms or conditions. The party have to choose between them if they want to get out alive. Tankar seals a deal with the Vengeance seekers, the party will be transported to where Gathra the hag is and will destroy her and return the seed to the vengeance seekers who will return it to the demon plane from whence it came and not return to any material plane for 2002 years. The tree will be removed and the city of Phlan given a chance to recover and heal. Glim and Crow ask to be healed by these demons talking and their request is granted but no further assistance will be given. Tankar finally accepts these terms that both parties have mutually agreed upon. The faces all disappear. The top of the chamber opens up, the walls retract and the floor starts raising up into the air. They are deposited into a chamber of pure white light that is exposing the seed. A silver orb bubbles in the centre of the room, tendrils reach out from either side of the room towards the orb. At the far end of the room is a platform with a pure crystal lens with images of a women flickering before the lens. Up on the platform next to the lens is a T Rex with a green skinned woman standing next to it. The Hag. Combat commences. A raging storm wall of fire erupts between the hag and the party. Erupting from the wall next to Ortillo are 2 treants that attack him. Mid way through the battle the wall of fire disappears. Glod grabs the T Rex and pulls it into the ground, leaving it there to die and become a fossil. About 3 quarters the way into the combat the hag changes into a Yrathak, a huge green flying dinosaur type thing. She finally goes down after a lengthy battle and Ortillo cuts her head off just to make sure she is dead. On her body is found druids vestments, 2 earrings one useless the other an earring of +1Ac. 2 rings, one of freedom of movement the other acid resistance. Bracers of armour +6, a cloak of resistance +3, 3 vials of diamond dust, a jade circlet, a necklace which is a periapt of wisdom +6 and 2 jars of true seeing ointment. These are split up among various members of the group. A thin skinny creature appears and takes the egg seed as per the deal made. The tree start to disintegrate around the party, Glod protects them all from the fallout. After 2 to 3 minutes they find themselves in a massive crater in the centre of town.

into Phlans tunnels

once outside the tree tunnel the party notices some movement in several holes around the base of the giant tree. Jock, Tankar and Kurl sneak up to the holes to see if they can see what is causing the movement. They get half way there and hear a cry of alarm. There are Orcs and Trolls intermixed with them. Tankar turns invisible. There are roughly 100 Orcs and 12 Trolls in the group. Jock signals to the rest of the party. Glim walks up to them and begins to throw holy berries at them, Tankar breathes lightning at them. Violence ensues. Halfway through the battle Willowbark realises her knight Sir Uther is missing and then he suddenly appears on a horse, both of them wreathed in flames and charging into the horde of monsters. After dispatching the opposing enemies the party are left with one troll that surrenders and the party let him leave after certain conditions are met. Willowbark admonishes Sir Uther on his disappearance and leaving her unguarded and in danger. It seems he will only act when she is in mortal danger and then he can activate certain magical traits to try and assist her. The first is to change into elemental forces, the second is to summon a celestial steed which is a horse or some sort of flying creature, he also thinks he can summon a dolphin but has never tried. The party find a golden statue of a demon, some nice swords and a sack of money. There are piles and piles of tents which lead to the conclusion that they were about to set up a camp. Willowbark ascertains which hole they came from and follows the tracks down a hole they came out of. The party enter. The tunnel contains a lot of mud, water dripping from the ceiling and a smell. Willowbark soon looses sight of the tracks when Cathbad lends his sense of scent tracking to her talents and they both soon lead the party onwards. It starts to get warmer the further they go. There are sounds of creaking coming from somewhere ahead. After half an hour they enter a wide cave where the walls are made of wood, there are pools of water everywhere with a path going through the middle of the room. There is water raining down the walls of the cave. Glim freezes the water which starts to destabilise the room. Suddenly a huge purple worm falls from the ceiling into the path of the group. Battle commences. Once it dies it seems the battle is not quite over as another purple worm drops from the ceiling right into the middle of the party. Jock deals it a mighty killing blow. Meanwhile under the earth Glod is fighting his own battle against two more giant purple worms which he dispatches. Jock collects purple worm skin for future work with his leatherworking skill. It starts to get a lot hotter than anyone can bear. Glim casts a spell to protect the group. As they move further the air is getting drier and cracks start appearing in the walls. There is a chamber ahead with flickering light. A stone monolith stands in the middle of the room. It is made from pure shadow and is from the Plane of Shadow. The light starts to fade. There are shadowy creatures in the room trying to hide from the group, it seems they do not want to tangle with three exalted members of the group who escort the party through the chamber safely. They find themselves back in the tunnels which are still getting hotter. Walking towards them is something evil, a little girl. A wall appears behind her blocking any further advance. She is a manifestation of something, the party thinks the tree. Jock approaches her. She warns she doesnt want conflict with the party or to kill us as it would be inconvienient for her. The party is very powerful and may hurt her. She wishes to limit herself to one town instead of taking over the world. She raises the temperature again in a bid to get rid of the party. Negotiations are not going well so she dissappears, with her the wall goes as well. A voice in Tankars head says hot cold wind water. He doesnt answer and the choice is made, hot. They continue on to another chamber with a statue in the shape of a tree ent on a dais. It is made of black stone with yellow and white markings. Mimsy gets a message from Glod saying incoming and seconds later, emerging from the ground next to the party is a Truly Horrid Umberhulk. In the middle of the following combat the statue starts to move and joins in. The Umberhulk goes down very quickly and the party are left with the statue to contend with. Willowbark figures out it is a Golem of some sort. It seems it is immune to magic so the party has to resort to good old tooth and nails fighting. It soon goes down.

City of Phlan's Hag

The party take up residence in the now vacated castle only to find that the departing armies have stripped it bare of everything including all the doors except for the front gates and all the windows effectively leaving the castle nothing but a bare shell. Shortly after, there is a knock on the front gates. Cathbad after spending all his time in lion form devouring the remains of the worm carcass decides to open the gates. Standing outside is a young girl of about 17 years of age wearing nothing but a short tunic, she is a messenger from the druids. She asks for the master of the castle and Cathbad departs and gets Glim who is now fully shrunken in size. The Great Druid asks for the groups immediate attendance at the grove. The party head on over and on arriving find a herd of 20 to 30 Pegasi grazing in the grove. The Great Druid tells of a nearby city called the City of Phlan that is in need of powerful adventurers. The Great Druid tells that the city was resurrected from near death. It was destroyed by dragons, taken over by dragons and another creature. The Great Druid helped the city and defeated the other creature. She goes on to tell of the heirarchy of the druids. There is 1 Great Druid, 7 Grand Druids and that is where the problem lays. One of the Grand Druids decided to contest the Great Druid several years ago for the title of Grand druid and lost but was kept alive out of mercy. Her name is Guthra who is a green hag. Guthra sent a message to the Grand Druid saying in revenge for her defeat several years ago she is now going to destroy the City of Phlan. The Great Druid has arranged transport for the party, hence the Pegasi. Glim arranges for the Druids to furnish his castle with doors and furniture for him. It seems Guthra likes dinosaurs and eating babies. Totally evil. The party head off via air pegasi. Cathbad turns into a pegasus himself and takes the lead as he has studied a map the druids have given him. 1st stop for the party is a place called Zhentil keep which the party avoids at all costs. They decide to head for a pitstop at another town called Hillsfar. It is located on the coast. They arrive at sunset just outside the city walls next to a river so the pegasi can rest. They approach the city gates. There is 2 large gates with a smaller gate enclosed in it. It opens up, a man appears and asks for 5gp each for every person entering the town. He says he has a note from the cirty council demanding a head tax for every person. Willowbark looks at it and it actually is from the town council but says this man is an extortionist and to disregard anything he says. Willowbark has Sir Uther knock him out so they can enter, but he breaks his jaw instead. Inside the city there is a man selling torches. About 50 to 60 yards inside is an inn called the Faithful Hound. They enter, inside is quite nice, a roaring fire, tables and chairs and a bar. Cathbad organises food and lodging for the party for the night then he disappears to go sleep with the pegasi and to find food for them. Meanwhile food and drink arrive. Rather than beer, Willowbark orders blue elvish wine for herself and Cedric. The bartender also brings them 2 plates of green cheese that is stamped with a spider motiff. They eat the cheese. It turns out to be Netherese Death Cheese and highly addictive but somehow they both resist its addictive substances. Considering Willowbarks past addiction, it is quite miraculous. Morning comes and the party stock up on some supplies including some healing potions. As soon as the party leave the city they see 3 pagasi jump on Cathbad and hold him down, the rest of the herd run off into the forest. They seem perturbed about something. Cathbad changes into a dire bear and the 3 run off to join the herd. It seems they dont like being watched while they go about their private business and Cathbad had offended them. He apologises and they come back. The party take off and land again after a days flying. They land on the shores of an inner sea that is slightly salty but drinkable. Sweetwater village is located on these shores. It has about 30 to 40 buildings surrounding a central well. They camp down outside the village for the night. 4 men wearing leather armour and carrying polearms approach the party. Willowbark on seeing armed men bearing down on them fires a warning shot at their feet and demands they halt. 2 run off. They came to investigate why an armed force has camped down outside their village. The party explains they are only passing and the 2 men return back to the village. Shortly after a bell starts to toll and they see 20 to 30 men in armour forming up to attack the party. Seems Willowbark has got the party into trouble again by firing 1st. Pegasus Cathbad hurries over to the men of the village and transforms back into human form and tries to avoid bloodshed between the 2 parties. It works and he organises a truce. Cedric and Willowbark still high on elvin wine decide to take 1st watch and to keep an eye on Glim who wants to burn the entire village down. Morning arrives without incident and they continue on to Phlan. After about 2 to 3 hours Cathbad and Willowbark spot a huge tree in the distance. It is 800 foot tall and occupies the whole city of Phlan. There are columns and columns of refugees heading out from the city. The party land and try to get information from them. Crow talks to an old man who says they are leading all the children to safety and all remaining adults were staying behind to defend the city. It seems this huge tree erupted in the center of the city and just kept growing and growing, with various monsters also erupting from the tree. There is a lot of fighting going on in the city. The fighting is being co ordinated by a Priest of Tyr called Valeria and the party should seek her out. They continue on. Phlan is now a city of ruins, taken over by the tree and surrounding plant life which has grown into all buildings of the city. A mile and a half outside the city on a hill is a hastily erected fort which the party descend into. The soldiers here look at the party with hope in their eyes. A captain approaches and takes them to see Valeria who is in the headquarters which is a cave. She reports that scouts have been sent into the city and returned with reports of passageways into the tree. Cathbad offers the services of the party. The party deduces various things about the Great tree. From Willowbark, the tree is sucking all the nutrients out of the surrounding plant life and the tree and surrounding evil plant life has supplanted all natural flora and fauna in the city. From Kurl, there is a small cult that worships the demon Malgarius and believe they hold a captive called Lazbralthull. From Mimsy, the tree resembles a demon called Malgarius who is a ruler of the abyss. There is a seed that controls the tree of Malgarius. There are ancient texts that say Malgarius can be controlled by an ancient artifact or this seed. Those in the party that can heal offer support to the soldiers and then rest for the night before heading into the city. Cathbad receives an official bounty for the party for a reward of 50gp for the group if they can defeat the tree. Crow takes point with Willowbark following and they head off into the city with a local guide. He takes them to an opening in the ground under the tree. Crow and Willowbark enter first, the party follows. The air is damp and hot inside. the Walls and ceiling is a shiny resinous material. Glim tests the walls, they are not flammable. Cathbad feels the tree is alive but it looks like a plant but doesnt feel like a plant. They feel like something is watching them. Cathbad changes into a Warbound Impaler which is a giant plant thing and casts anti plant shell on the party for protection. The partys ears are popping to the shifting in the gravity. Basalt and Cedric find it hard to breathe, it seems the air is getting sucked out of the tunnel. the party soon notice this and start getting into difficulty. Sir Uther on seeing this grabs Willowbark and starts kissing her. He is gallantly giving his oxygen to her to save her life. She tries to resist but has no hope against his size and strength. He carries her back out of the tunnel and the party withdraw as well.

9 February 2014

After spending time with the dwarves, the party decide the best way to approach the castle is to reconniter the area. The castle is nestled in some foothills. Glim drinks his permanent shrinking potion and gradually becomes smaller over time. They decide to go clockwise around the castle and into the foothills. It is covered in a lot of flowers, with not a lot of trees in the area. Cathbad changes into a Giant Owl and flies everybody up into the foothills to an appropriate vantage point above the castle. They are encamped roughly 1 mile and a half and 300 feet above the castle. Willowbark uses her snipers monocle to try and see further than the party. The castle looks to be a solid rectangle building around a keep. It is 2 to 3 floors approximately with what looks like barracks or a stable. There is an open area on the roof that has an animal pen the size of a tilting yard. The corner tower and walls are roughly 15 feet thick with crenelations along the wall. There are small windows on upper levels. The surrounding country is open grassland. There looks to be no signs of movement from inside the castle. The party decide to camp for the night and visit the castle in the morning. Cathbad takes first watch still in Owl form. He notices something coming down the hill towards the party. It is making loud jingling noises. It is a man leading a horse. Cathbad flies nearer to him to investigate. He repeats who who, several times at the man. The man is wearing very shiny armour that is heavily embossed. The horse starts to slip towards the party on the path, Cathbad tries to stop it. The horse panics and races towards the sleeping party, narrowly missing Crow who manages to deftly dodge out of the way. Cathbad lights up the area to awaken the party. The man who turns out to be a Knight professes his undying love and loyalty to Willowbark. It seems this is the Knight that she acquired from the deck of many things. A human! He loves her, she hates him though it seems she will abide his company for now. He asks why the sky doesn’t have 3 moons, seems he comes from another world. Willowbark gives him 2 rules. 1 is to keep her out of harms way by any means possible. the 2nd rule is to protect the party from Willowbark doing anything stupid that will potentially harm the party. Cathbad says good luck to that. After much questioning they find out his name is Sir Uther and he is a Knight of the Rose and a Knight of Solamnia. His horse is called Moonlight. The party explain their predicament to him and he immediately heads off to the castle to battle the dragons. Wilowbark has to order him to stop and rest for the night as him and his horse have been travelling non stop for a day. He shares his food with the party which consists of an everlasting wheel of cheese, which he somehow acquired from a genie. The party go back to sleep and the rest of the night goes by without incident. In the morning they head towards the back of the castle, once again Willowbark uses her snipers monocle to investigate the castle. There are 4 windows. She wants Glod to knock a hole in the castle walls so the party can enter, Glim protests as he doesn’t want his property damaged. Cathbad changes into an Eagle and flies up to the windows. The first room he can see is wood panelled with various furniture and a large bed holding a sleeping giant. There is a tapestry on the wall with shadows emanating from under the bed. There looks like no door to this room. The second room is similar but has a lot of spiderwebs and giant spiders in it. He does a 360 flight around the castle and finds another window. There is a sulphurous dung smell coming from above. He investigates. The roof top area contains a Griffon that is wandering around. Cathbad positions himself in a position that guarantees his safety and converses with the creature. He is called Griff the Griffon. He says the castle belongs to the dragon lords who are currently in residence. The spiders are Driders and the Giant is Classus the cloud giant who thinks he is a guest. Cathbad questions Grif about the dragons. There is a young green dragon who is arrogant but thinks very highly of the law and respects it to a rather extreme degree. The other is a White dragon who is the greens auntie and is very cunning. Rumours of a dracholich he doesn’t know. Another Griffon called Norman comes out and starts arguing with Grif so Cathbad takes his leave and returns to the party. Meanwhile Glim, Willowbark and Uther in tow head around towards the main gate. She notices a crossbow pointing down at them. Glim politely knocks on the front gates. The gates are opened by a man in purple livery, he is a butler. Glim states his ownership of the castle and asks to be let in. The butler refuses and starts to head off to inform the dragons. Glim doesn’t want that, he wants to surprise the dragons so Willowbark has Uther knock the man unconscious. He misses and the butler calls for help before managing to get fried to death by Glim casting scorching ray on him. They enter. Inside is a large courtyard and heading towards them is a very large purple worm. They attack it but it manages to catch Glim in its mouth. The rest of the party arrive and join the combat. The worm swallows Glim. It eventually goes down and Glim with a bit of help from the party manages to cut himself free from the belly of the monster. There is a main staircase going into the castle, several doorways, 2 staircases going up, a dais stairway leading up to a main door. There are pillars holding up a roof, also another small door and dais with another small door. Cathbad tells the party what he has found out about the inhabitants of the castle. They decide to head towards the main doors, it is barred from the inside. Glod smashes his way through. There is a small corridor, about 20 feet away are barrels forming a barricade. Behind it is 3 men with 6 crossbows. The party intimidate them into leaving. There is a corridor crossing this area. The left has a set of spiral stairs leading down, the right has double doors, ahead is a staircase going up. They head left. Coming up the staircase is a very large horse sized humanoid frog. Willowbark fires at it, Glim stops her and talks to it. He is a demon, Glim orders it as lord of the castle to return to wherever it came from. It departs after telling the party that there is a White dragon in the next room. Willowbark gets excited over seeing a white dragon and makes enough noise to wake the dead. The doors explode open and a voice invites everyone in. Willowbark looks in the room. There Is a large stage with a very large white dragon resting on it. The room is painted gold. Glim steps in and greets the dragon. She wants to know who else is here, Basalt, Kurl and Crow step into the room behind Glim. Glim tries to match wits with her. She eventually summons Kobolds to go and get her nephew. The kobolds head off, there is screaming and thumping coming from the rooms above. Soon there is a rumbling and thumping coming along the corridor. The green dragon has turned up. As this dragon respects the law Glim shows his title deed to the dragon. It puts its face in Glims face and tells everyone to leave now. Uther doesn’t need to be asked twice, he picks up Willowbark and leaves. Glim and the green dragon face off against each other and debate who is the lawful owner of the castle. As lord and master of the castle and surrounding areas Glim makes the rules and eventually manages to evict the dragons from the castle. They agree and Glim gives them 10 days to leave. The party depart back to the clearing above the castle and wait out the 10 days. During that time they notice the evacuation of the castle containing various creatures. A horde of goblins, worgs, several dire lions, a cloud giant, toad demon, a beholder, several demons, a gnome, a red dragon, a green dragon and a white dragon leave the castle. Glim goes down to talk to the gnome, he is a vampire. Willowbark shoots at him, he flies away. The castle is now empty for Glim and the party to investigate. Even though they managed to get away with disposing of all the creatures without a fight, there is a feeling that the dragons, now angry at having to leave, will turn up again to exact their revenge at some stage.
